Right as Rain kicks off the Derek Strange series. Strange, a sixty-ish black PI, is a pretty smooth character, a former cop who is fond of westerns. Terry Quinn is a white disgraced former cop who works in a used book and record store. Pelecanos uses their contrasting characteristics to explore race relations in Washington DC while they tackle the case of Chris Wilson, the off-duty cop Quinn killed.

Sound like Lethal Weapon? It's not, although Strange and Quinn poke fun at the Gibson and Glover action comedy a couple times. Strange and Quinn are both very well developed characters. Quinn's an intense guy and isn't sure if he shot Wilson because he was brandishing a gun or because he was black. Further complicating Quinn's feelings on race are Juana, his half-black, half-Puerto Rican girlfriend. Strange has been in a casual relationship with his secretary for years but won't commit despite feeling fatherly toward her son Lionel.

The friendship between Strange and Quinn grows naturally, first over westerns and boxing, and seemed pretty believable to me. I found myself caring about their relationships with their women and with each other more than the eventual gunplay I knew was coming.

The villains of the piece, the drug dealers, aren't as developed as I would have liked but the story is more about the interactions between Strange and Quinn anyway. Although I did like that Pelecanos had them leave DC for the country a bit. Both men emerge from the story changed men to some degree. Strange's case turns out well and Quinn learns a few things about himself.

Spotted this novel in paperback at the airport one day, some years ago, and was instantly hooked. Pelecanos has a great way of describing the atmosphere and vibe of Washington DC and the surrounding area. His characters are real. They live lives that are real, with all the attendant problems and mistakes. There are no easy solutions to his stories and they usually involve a character making a decision to risk everything dear to him in order to do the right thing. I enjoy the way the music choices of the characters serve so well to describe not just their melodic proclivities, but also to add insight into what is meaningful to them. This is a simple story, simply told and wonderfully executed. Everyone is, by now, familiar with Pelecanos's writing credits in print and on TV. This is an indicator of what he was doing before that fame made him much better known
It is so hard to find a good storyteller who has control over his craft as well as a good story to tell. George Pelecanos is one of those guys especially with these two characters of Strange and Tuh-ree or Terry ).
This is the first book for these two characters but at the same time you can see he has left bread crumbs to build on for a series. Strange an older black guy and Terry a white disgraced cop is an odd pair and the relation is build in a slow tempo without rushing into it. In spite of the differences the biases and prejudices which we all have they are not hidden or glossed over.
It is a well written book and the ends on a believable note.
The language and flow of the story is very calm without lot of jerks or rush to end it which happens to many a good writers. This book is just as right as rain....enjoy
This was my first Pelecanos novel and I had high expectations because I really enjoyed The Wire. The story itself is standard crime novel type stuff containing few real surprises and quite a few dumb scenarios. But the really disappointing thing was the lack of realistic dialogue. I don't think there was a single exchange among characters that didn't seem uncomfortably forced. That really surprised me because dialogue is the strength of The Wire. Many of the conversations revolved around racial topics and came across as preachy to me. Endless musical references that added nothing to the story and google-map like directions that described character movement through D.C. were also disappointing elements. If you want gritty crime novels with excellent dialogue try James Ellroy, Elmore Leonard, or Charles Willeford!
