After the Fall Charity Norman 9781743314890 Books

This is the first novel by this author I've read and I really enjoyed it. It tells the story of a family who move across the world, thinking that life will be better there, but of course changing where you live doesn't change your family dynamics as this story proves. I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.

After the Fall Charity Norman 9781743314890 Books Reviews

This story was a bit slow to begin with, I had hoped there would be a few more twists and turns in it and was quite disappointed to see that there wasnt. Although the story did develop there were a few storylines that werent necessary and didnt benefit the story as a whole. A fine read but probably wouldnt propell me to pick up another story from the same author.
Stayed up late Into the night several times to propel myself into the story. It was captivating and full of love and a wonderful story of family and making a family out of the new people you meet when you live far away.
It was especially touching for me as I knew the area it was set in and could see it and smell it and taste it through the author's words on the page.
A lovely tale that will stay with me a long time (only that I am shipping the actual book to my BF in NZ).
Often people leave their countries in search of the Garden of Eden or to flee from hardships or themselves Just as often they find that immigration comes at a price for which they made no provision. Evil exists everywhere. Not to be informed about the caliber of the inhabitants, their follies and foibles and the availability of drugs amounts to an unforgivable state of ignorance for parents. The country may be beautiful and offer financial rewards but there is no substitute for the true and trusted mores of one's country and the family especially when disaster occurs. It takes a very long time to dispel the feeling of being displaced.
Good, quick read.
I picked up this book in the bookshop at Heathrow airport, mainly because it is set in New Zealand, my home country. It is hard to do the east Coast of New Zealand justice in terms of its beauty and savagery. It is a wild, isolated part of the country, with strong Maori roots, and I was pleasantly surprised at the vivid picture Norman manages to create.

Her tale follows an English family's move to New Zealand out of desperation to escape financial disaster in England. She captures the anguish of a teenager torn from her school and friends, and the total disorientation she experiences plonked down at the local high school with both sensitivity and the sense of detachment any parent has once their child grows away.

Little by little Norman introduces a teenager's insidious slide into addiction winding darkly through a picture of sun, sand and the enchantment a new country has until the shine wears thin with time. The huge tragedy that finally unfolds will tug hard at any parent's heart, and I couldn't put the book down until I finished.

A fabulous read.
This was the first time I read a book of this author and I was completely bowled over by it.I read it in two evenings and was surprised how it completely pulled me in. The story was so believable and told in such vivid language. I am an avid reader and always hope to hit gold trawling the . This time I did.
One of those books you just cannot put down. I read it in a couple of sittings and the memory still lingers. A truly gripping read.
