I really like Ms. Coulter's writing style. In this case, though, the content could not overcome even the best turn of phrase.**** SPOILERS AHEAD ****
The earl has nothing (except maybe good looks) to recommend him. He rapes his bride - more than once - in his quest to "get an heir on her." After raping her he visits/sleeps with his mistress (also more than once). Luckily, one night he gives his unwilling bride enough brandy to help loosen her inhibitions, which causes her to becomes a more willing partner to her husband forever after. Magic!
And about the fair lady Frances: while some of her behavior is excusable (after all, her father gave her away in marriage to settle a debt of sorts, and her husband is a world-class jerk) she often comes across as immature and a shrew. If the author hadn't thrown in the bit about the horse thievery - a sloppy attempt to distract the reader from the awful couple if you ask me - our young lovers are either harping at each other or having raunchy sex. How magical!
Towards the end of the story the earl begins to realize how much Frances means to him, but it feels more like the author was frantic to make the earl slightly lovable rather than a natural transition of feelings. Frances, brave girl that she is, stops harping long enough to become bosom buddies with the earl's mistress (in fact, they join forces to beat him up a bit in once scene). There now, doesn't that sound like a nice, MAGICAL happily ever after?
I like a sexy Regency romance as much as the next person, but this one was so far off the mark I don't think I'll be looking for another book by CC again.

Midsummer Magic Magic Trilogy Catherine Coulter 9780451209191 Books Reviews
Have read this three times over the past few years and everytime I have enjoyed the trilogy. It is historical and I highly recommend the three books.
I normally read Catherine Coulter's FBI series. This was quite a change. I would have enjoyed less sex and more of the mystery side of the story. A great romance novel.
Could not out down. Read four hours straight. Had to keep reading the next day. Great story line. Need to read
This fun story was very intriguing, full of mystery, mishaps and romance. Recommended for regency romance readers of a more mature nature as there are explicit sex scenes.
I like Catherine Coulter however I had a difficult time reading how Frances was treated by Hawk and his excuses as why it was ok to practically rape Frances and then all of a sudden she yearns for him. The storyline was ok.
Hawk grudgingly takes himself from a life of mistresses and lusty living to the wilds or Scotland to fulfill his father's promise by marrying a daughter of the man who saved his fathers life. Hawk's plan is to marry one of them and then dump her at his country estate and he will return to London and his life will resume as usual. Upon arrival he finds the laird has three daughters from which to choose. Two of the sisters vie for Hawk's attention but the third, Francis, doesn't want anything to do with him as she loves her home in Scotland. The plot is predictable in that Hawk of course chooses Francis as she was plain and dowdy and would not interrupt his life. I found the feisty attitude of Francis rather enduring as she plots to foil Hawk's marriage plans. Francis' never calling him by name was also well done.
The book is entertaining, but the editing on the kindle version stinks. There are exclamation points in place of "Ls". There are scenes that flash to other scenes with no deliniation, so that you become confused. Someone needs to edit this eBook again.
