A Comedy of Terrors eBook Graeme Smith

The first two lines are worth the cost of the book. (Of course, I shared them with my son as soon as I stopped chuckling, so I really got my money's worth!) The story is quite cute, and the main character endearing. Segorian is sweet, a bit naive and oh, so chivalric. Steeped in humor, it is a tale of devotion, seasoned with outrageous situations. Others have said the writing is silly...and yes, it certainly is! However, if this were written in a dramatic voice, it would surely break your heart.

Do yourself a favor and read this book. Then, wait in line with me for the sequel that we all hope is soon in coming.

A Comedy of Terrors eBook Graeme Smith Reviews

Very Funny
Loved it
A uniquely written story, Graeme sucks you in with his wit. You'll easily fall in love with the "idiot," and if you have a husband like mine, you'll find the story not only enjoyable but relatable. Honey, if you're reading this review, I'm only kidding.

As a reader of mostly YA novels, this was a totally different read and it turned out to be quite a treat. Picturing an idiot trying to get a dragon near a castle, without alerting the guards was hilarious. And having the queen confiding in said dragon was just perfect. It made me think of listening to a Scotsman tell tales around a campfire, surrounded by ale and laughter. I highly recommend it. I found it truly enjoyable and you will too.
I read Graeme Smith's second book, 'Jack Shadow', after reading 'A Comedy of Terrors', and I must admit I was impressed by the author's ability to weave such disparate tales, while retaining a unique, identifiable presence in each work.
I am a huge fantasy fan, and also a man who loves good comedy. Like Piers Anthony's Xanth series, Mr. Smith paints a world which perfectly fits with what we expect from high fantasy - there are dragons, brave heroes (even if they are Court Idiots), evil demons, various fantasy races, there is intrigue, betrayals, love, deception, terror and many, many laughs. The humour varies between dry wit, irony, play on words and slapstick, and is always there to alleviate the darker, more serious passages in the book. I was rooting for Segorian a few pages into the book, and while I will not spoil your experience, I was deeply satisfied by the way all narrative threads were resolved at the end. The work is peppered with layers pop-culture references and in-jokes which are a pleasure to discover, and any fan of fantasy fiction can enjoy the deconstruction of the tropes which are standard for the genre.
If you like your dragons and heroes and have a sense of humour, grab this book and spend some wonderful hours in another world and another time. I sure enjoyed my time there a lot.
This genre is not what I normally read and I was very pleasantly surprised. Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the book, I found that I was always picking up my kindle, iPhone or iPad to continue it. That's a good barometer for how much I liked it. Graeme Smith's writing style is different than what I'm used to but it works so well. It keeps the reader engaged and looking for what Segorian and the Queen will get up to next. Segorian is so much the everyday man and clearly is no idiot.....It's just his job is an Idiot! I found that since the character description was left to a minimum, I was able to let my imagination paint the scenerey and the characters. This makes me look forward to Graeme's next book and I hope to see more of Segorian and Sonea.
The hook that drew me in was the concept of the Royal Idiot - the person who's job it is to get blamed for things. I could see an entire D&D campaign based on that idea... But I digress.

Although Segorian isn't by any means a black-hearted rogue, the tone and story reminded me of an episode of "Blackadder" - fast-moving, good level of comedy throughout, and a generous amount of trouble piling on the hero despite his best efforts to the contrary. Fortunately, just as heroes have idiotic moments, Idiots have Heroic moments - and sometimes that's enough.

Of course, there's room for a sequel, and I'm looking forward to it.
Congrats to the author!
The book was filled with clever turns of lines and humor, despite the multi-headed demons.
The main compliant I have is that there may have been a bit to much silly, witty writing. There was no break from it, and it did feel a bit disjointed at times.
